Excellent architecture creates identity: LKA Schwerin sets unmistakably dynamic accents

At a time when architectural design is increasingly based on aesthetic uniqueness and imaginative forms, the new building for the Forensic Science Institute in Schwerin is a particularly fascinating sight. In the middle of a property built as a barracks complex in the Schwerin Lake District landscape conservation area, the newly created laboratory and administration building, with its free and almost floating form, deliberately breaks through the existing rigid barracks structure and creates a completely new identity in an architecturally highly impressive way. It is not without reason that BHBVT Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH was awarded the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Building Prize for this project in 2006.
Uniquely designed shading elements for the highest demands
Based on the existing situation, a sun protection solution was sought that would interfere as little as possible with the facade construction and also emphasize the design of the facade in an exceptionally appealing way. In order to meet the high requirements, a decision was made in 2020 to use motorized sliding elements from EHRET GmbH. The intervention at the top of the facade was not insignificant. The underside of the facade construction was opened up, the running rails were covered with special brackets and integrated into the surrounding wing-shaped lens construction. The lower connection, on the other hand, was comparatively simple. Here, the lower guides were mounted to the post-and-beam facade with brackets.
Special sun protection design for a facade with a floating character
A total of 137 aluminum sliding shutter panels were installed, featuring custom-made curved runners, guide rails, and special roller guides to perfectly match the radius of the facade. Equipped with an electric drive that allows convenient operation via central control, sun monitors, and individual control in each room, the EHRET sliding shutters are gently moved into the desired position.
Design and functionality in colorful and multifaceted perfection
The PL-LO sliding shutter model with perforated sheets in three different shades of green (NCS 1080-G30Y, NCS 1075-G40Y, and NCS 1075-G60Y), whose perforation, direction and arrangement of the elements were calculated and specified by an energy expert, not only ensures optimum heat input into the building, but also impresses with its modern design, varied color scheme, and atmospheric lighting effects, which create a special ambience when the sun shines and enrich the rooms with a certain feel-good factor. The sun protection elements from EHRET allow the new building construction with its impressive floating facade design to perfectly reflect its new identity.
