In order to combine individual lifestyles with the idea of intergenerational, neighborly living, the “Altstadtkieker” GbR building cooperative constructed 21 barrier-free residential units in the Petriviertel district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. The newly built residential district “Beim Holzlager,” which overlooks the old town, deliberately contrasts with the brick old town thanks to its concrete and larch wood-clad facade elements.
The C-shaped building block, the semi-public courtyard, the shared roof terrace, and the common room as a place of great public relevance are intended to promote contemporary forms of coexistence while maintaining a balance between public, semi-public, and private living spaces. The design was created by the Berlin-based firm Löser Lott Architekten GmbH and won first prize in an architectural competition. The project was awarded the Rostock Architecture Prize 2021 and the BDA Prize Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 2021.
Sun protection from EHRET for a natural facade design
The “Wohnen beim Holzlager” location combines proximity to nature on the banks of the Warnow with an attractive location at the foot of the eastern old town. The result is a remarkable residential building that not only offers livable space for families, single parents, singles, and couples, but also confidently displays its internal floor plan structure to the outside world. The three floors are characterized by natural wood cladding and rest majestically on a concrete base.
Wooden sliding shutters for a scenic urban atmosphere
The Rostock-based firm cubus architekten, responsible for the implementation planning, relied on the sophisticated technology and many years of experience of EHRET GmbH when choosing the sliding shutters. The wooden cladding of the facades, alternating with wooden sliding shutters and textile shading, creates a uniform design on the one hand and offers optimal sun protection on the other. A total of 89 NATURE model sliding shutter panels with glazed slats in color 1143 onyx silver and SL type frames made of extruded aluminum in RAL 7022 (shade gray) fine structure matt from EHRET GmbH were installed. To ensure comfort, functionality, and aesthetics in equal measure, the upper running rails were recessed into the niche of the horizontal exposed concrete strips by means of lintel mounting.
