Folding sliding shutters at the heart of a highly climate-stable building envelope. At the Conservation Centre in Regensburg, designed by the architectural practice Georg Zunner Architekten, EHRET folding sliding shutters combine solar protection, energy efficiency and architectural aesthetics to create a sustainable and harmonious solution.
At the new Conservation Centre for the museums and archives of the City of Regensburg and the Diocese of Regensburg, EHRET folding sliding shutters make a significant contribution to the building’s climate stability and to the long-term preservation of collections, some of which are several thousand years old. Designed as a highly energy-efficient building, the project is based on a simple principle: minimizing the need for active air conditioning through a high-performance building envelope and intelligent management of solar heat gains.
To achieve this goal, 268 motorised folding sliding shutters were integrated into the perforated aluminium façade. Controlled by the building management system, they help reduce heating and cooling requirements while protecting sensitive artworks and archive holdings from UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.
The integration of the guide and drive systems presented a particular challenge. Specific fixing solutions were developed to preserve the aesthetic uniformity of the façade while meeting the building’s structural and safety requirements
Beyond their solar protection function, EHRET folding sliding shutters play a full role in the architectural identity of the project. The monumental artwork that covers the façade extends naturally onto the shutters.
To create the motif of protective hands, nearly 680,000 lemon-yellow aluminium rivets were installed by hand by a team of eight people over a period of three months.
The Conservation Centre for Museums and Archives in Regensburg perfectly illustrates EHRET’s ability to combine solar protection, energy efficiency and architectural quality. Thanks to the harmonious integration of the folding sliding shutters into the artistic façade, the building ensures optimal conservation conditions while asserting a strong and enduring visual identity.
