Turley Mannheim urban district: aluminum folding sliding shutters for an impressive monolithic brick construction

Ehret Turley Mannheim 01

Two residential buildings, a daycare center, and an existing structure—the construction project planned by architect Max Dudler on behalf of developer Sebastian Wipfler on the former Turley Barracks site in Mannheim has been completed. Interwoven with alleys, the imposing buildings surround a central town square, giving the newly created area the character of a self-sufficient city. In this new district, whose appearance is significantly influenced by a listed barracks building from the imperial era, the multi-award-winning Max Dudler once again impresses with a minimalist architectural language inspired by the existing buildings.

In combination with the three monolithic new buildings and the deliberate choice of materials and colors, a fascinating ensemble of old and new architecture was created. The rough exterior plaster, which is precisely colored to match the sandstone, and the fine base made of red-polished Neckartäler hard sandstone are evidence of perfectly coordinated detail development in the preliminary stages. But the focus on a few simple materials such as plastered brick, load-bearing reinforced concrete, wood, and steel also emphasizes the monolithic architecture, which, by dispensing with insulation materials, is entirely focused on a construction method that is both forward-looking and traditional, and also functions in an energetically sophisticated manner.

Fascinating facade design using steel elements
The surrounding frames and folding sliding shutters made of aluminum on the window openings set freely into the facades contrast sharply with the solid walls made of Poroton bricks and, as a dominant design element, give the facade an unmistakably personal character. The plan to integrate surrounding 4-sided metal frames with modern aluminum folding sliding elements into the buildings presented a major challenge. Thanks to significant involvement and support during the planning phase, the client was convinced by the many years of experience and expertise of EHRET GmbH.

EHRET folding sliding shutters: Comfortable living in the new urban district
The modern wind, weather, and sun protection solution made of aluminum in the special color IGP-classic 591T (copper tone) can be opened and closed as easily as an accordion without a large opening radius and can be folded into the reveal to save space. A total of 502 EHRET folding sliding shutters were installed, with a successful mix of the MATRICO-SL12 model for a pleasant mesh-like view and the PLANO-SL12 with smooth sheet metal filling for complete darkening, especially for the sleeping area. In addition to meeting the highest aesthetic standards, the fine mesh of the expanded metal grid measuring 62x25x9.0x2.0 mm not only ensures an optimal indoor climate, but also creates atmospheric lighting conditions that stylishly emphasize the ambience of the interior. Equipped with herringbone parquet flooring, wooden windows, smooth plastered brick walls, and the ever-visible reinforced concrete ceilings, these rooms create a sense of well-being with their architectural perfection.
